North Dakota Becoming Broadband Leader
North Dakota broadband leaders released a state broadband report highlighting substantial investments to make North Dakota number one in the country for providing high-speed fiber optic access. Through the efforts of telecommunication providers, fiber optic cable has been installed to most homes and businesses in the state.
“Dakota Carrier Network and its 15 owner telecommunications companies have put 40,000 miles of fiber optics in the ground to extend ultra-high-speed broadband capabilities to every corner of the state,” said Seth Arndorfer, Dakota Carrier Network CEO. “Our network is bringing gigabit-capable broadband services to hundreds of business locations.”

Allete Division Minnesota Power Completes Latest Phase of Bison Wind Energy Center
Minnesota Power, a division of Allete, Inc., has completed commissioning on the latest phase of the Bison Wind Energy Center in North Dakota. The 205MW Bison 4 expansion features 64 Siemens turbines and output is delivered to the utility’s customers through a 465-mile direct current transmission line linking with Duluth. The almost 500MW produced by Bison’s total of 165 turbines now rank it as North Dakota’s largest wind farm. The project is located near New Salem, ND. The total Bison Wind Energy Center project will generate enough energy to power 92,000 homes.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple joined executives from ComDel Innovation, Inc. and Altavian in announcing the companies’ agreement to manufacture unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and UAS components at ComDel’s high-tech manufacturing plant in Wahpeton.
Based in Gainesville, Fla., Altavian provides unmanned aerial systems and associated data collection services with applications in the fields of precision agriculture, infrastructure analysis, natural resource management and conservation for government, commercial and research-based customers.

FAA Announces Expanded UAS Airspace in North Dakota
The Northern Plains (UAS) Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Site in collaboration with the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) announced the approval to expand operations throughout the state of North Dakota. This authorization, granted under the FAA’s Certification of Authorization (COA) process, allows the industry more efficient access to airspace for collaborative research. The FAA was able to approve this COA application based on maturity and the demonstrated safety and operational processes used by the Northern Plains UAS Test Site.
