The North Dakota Centers of Excellence Commission awarded funding requests for two Research North Dakota Grants for $473,983 at its meeting held Friday May 22, 2017.

Research ND promotes the development and commercialization of products and processes through industry/university research partnerships. Research ND provides matching funds to help companies pay for the university research.

Through Research ND and Research ND BIO, firms can leverage their research, development and commercialization funds and gain access to the creative talents and extensive research base of North Dakota’s Research Universities. Research ND and Research ND BIO matching funds are awarded on a competitive basis for projects based on proposals submitted jointly by researchers from a North Dakota research university and a private sector partner.

The following requests were funded:

Research ND

  • NDSU Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in partnership with Comfort King was awarded $32,000 to study the relationship between ergonomic data, material and manufacturing processes. This information will be used to customize its manufacturing process to each individual customer’s needs and provide greater sleep quality.
  • UND Office of Research and Economic Development in partnership with SkySkopes, Inc. was awarded $441,983 to use small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) equipped with thermal sensors to collect energy audit data on buildings on all North Dakota University System buildings. That data will then be converted into actionable information that will allow the partner to perform rapid analysis of thermal images and assess costs of thermal leaks in heated buildings.

The overall goal of Research ND and Research ND BIO grant programs is to have a long term positive economic impact on the State and Private Sector through various means including, but not limited to; economic diversification, improved production factors, and the development of new markets.
