Klaus Thiessen Chosen as Economic Developer of the Year

Klaus Thiessen, President and CEO, Grand Forks Region Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in Grand Forks, has been chosen as the 2014 Governor’s Choice for Economic Developer of the Year. The award ceremony was held in conjunction with the Economic Development Association of North Dakota’s fall meeting in Grand Forks.

Dakota Spirit Rising: First Corn Ethanol Plant Built in Five Years

Many eyes are focused on the ethanol plant rising from the prairie at Spiritwood, North Dakota. Highway drivers keep watch on progress on the plant just north of Interstate 94, and on the other side of the world, investors in China can watch as well on the live webcam streaming coverage of the work in progress on the website of Dakota Spirit AgEnergy LLC.

UND to study UAS Safety in Tropical Storms

Researchers at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks have received a $75,000 grant from Northrop Grumman Corp. to study the safety of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in tropical storms, the university said.

Northern Plains UAS Test Site Joins International Consortium

The International Consortium of Aeronautical Test Sites (ICATS) welcomed the Northern Plains UAS Test Site of North Dakota (U.S.) as a seventh member of the organization. Announced at the Unmanned Systems Canada annual conference, this new membership brings a new expertise within this international partnership, which so far included the participation of the UAV test and service centre (CESA) of Bordeaux in France, the Oklahoma State University – University Multispectral Laboratories (OSU-UML) in Oklahoma (U.S.), the National Aeronautical Centre from the United Kingdom, the Unmanned Aerial System Centre of Excellence of Quebec, Canada, as well as the CATUAV Tech Center in Barcelona and the Air Traffic Laboratory for Advanced Systems (ATLAS) in Jaén, both from Spain.


New ND Gas Plant Construction Starts

Flat Iron Steel Services is building a $40 million natural gas processing plant five miles north of Williston, North Dakota, along with a feeder pipeline system that will serve wells within a ten-mile radius of the plant. Phase 1 of the 45 Mmcf-a-day gas processing facility, will be in operation by October. A second phase is planned once the first unit is running and staffed with a crew of ten people.


North Dakota Second Highest Business Survival Rate
Through good times and bad, the churning of businesses and jobs is a hallmark of any dynamic capitalist economy. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Business Employment Dynamics (BDM) data series to determine the 10-year survival rates of establishments born in 2003. Overall, California had by far the highest survival rate between 2003 and 2013 while North Dakota ranked second.
